Next week it’s the start of the important business of 1. FC Nuremberg’s return to the Bundesliga but first of all there is the first round of the DFB Pokal…
In the first competitive game of the 2018-19 season, Der Club travel to SV Linx of the Verbandsliga Südbaden, nestled in the fifth tier of German football. It should be a formality, but this of course is FCN! Only once before has a fifth tier team beaten a Bundesliga club in the Pokal opening round. (No prizes for guessing that the vanquished team was FCN, defeated by SVV Ulm in 2001.) All Glubberer will be hoping to avoid this and set the course for a return to the Olympic Stadium in May for another chance to win the trophy last lifted in 2007.
In reality, there is a long, hard season ahead for Micheal Koellner and his team. Each game will be taken as it comes. Avoiding early embarrassment in the cup would help to set the tone for a season in which the majority of us will settle for Bundesliga survival.
Auf geht’s Glubb. Wir beruen diese liebe nicht.
