Optimism reigns at FCN as the season moves just past the half way point and approaches the winter break
With Glubb sitting pretty in 3rd place, just 1 point behind leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf and 5 ahead of fourth placed Ingolstadt, hopes of promotion look serious enough. Micheal Köllner has created a team playing with much of the passion that has been lacking in recent years, and with some style too. There have been a few horrible moments – consecutive defeats against Aue and St Pauli threatened to turn a promising start into a disaster, but resilience has been strong and the high points far outstrip the lows. Last week’s crucial win in Düsseldorf confirmed, if confirmation was needed, that the team is right to have ambitions higher than the 2.Bundesliga. The demolition of Duisburg and, naturally, the 3-1 victory in the Westvorstadt, were highly regarded wins.
So the optimism is justified. If we can get to the end of January with key players still at the club (leading scorer Ishak being vital to our success in 2018), and the same spirit and commitment can be shown, then come May the rise back to the top flight should be a reality.
But before Christmas there remains one more game – the visit of Wolfsburg to the Max Morlock Stadion in the DFB Pokal on Tuesday evening. We should never read too much into one-off games, but what better opportunity for the team to show their promotion credentials to a wider audience than by giving the Bundesliga’s twelfth placed team a run for their money. Victory would be a great gift from for the club and fans, to end a promising few months in the history of our great FCN.
